The political center of the umma fell but the followers of Muhammad which is the umma are still around today. The Caliphates helped the Islamic Empire grow but caused the true goal of the umma which was the egalitarian lifestyle to be lost with it.
Well Mr. Allegra.... the caliphs are the people who are seen as the spiritual leaders and temporal rulers of the umma. The caliphs did not achieve an egalitarian lifestyle. They destroyed the egalitarian lifestlye that muhammad had aimed for when putting together the umma. The calihps, Abu Bakhr, Omar, Athman and Ali caused the islamic empire to spread which ended the egalitarian lifestyle.
